Courses for the Summer 2023 Quarter

For the Pentecost Term
(July 10 through Sept. 22, 2023)
The CCFL will offer these exciting new courses:

Introduction to Theological Formation (SP-101) with the Rev. Dr. Robyn Neville, Ph.D.
Tuesdays @ 7pm Eastern via Zoom

This foundational course provides students with a chance to reflect on what it means to think theologically about personal faith, ordained leadership, and the leadership of all the baptized. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on the ways in which they are being called to serve God and the church, and to explore the challenges and growing edges of being formed for the ministries of word, liturgy, and compassion. This course is required for students who wish to participate in the process for diaconal formation.

Introduction to Theological Thinking (ST-102), with Dr. Joshua Davis, Ph.D.Sundays @ 5pm Eastern via Zoom

What does it mean to “think theologically”? This course will introduce students to the special terms, categories, and processes of theological reflection and engagement. An essential course for students who are considering greater leadership in their local faith communities, Introduction to Theological Thinking emphasizes critical analysis as it provides a systematic overview of how we create meaning through theological structures. This course is required for students who wish to participate in the process for diaconal formation.

Registration for the Pentecost Term (Summer Quarter, 2023) opens on June 12, 2023!

Registration forms must be submitted via email or online by June 23, 2023. No late registrations will be accepted. For more information and to register, please send an email to the CCFL Director, the Rev. Dr. Robyn Neville, at ccfl@diosef.org

Academic Terms

Instead of the traditional semester system, the Center has divided its courses across four academic quarters, distinguished according to liturgical season:

  • All Saints’/Advent Quarter:
    • Begins on or directly after the Feast of All Saints’ and continues through the second Sunday of Advent (Advent 2)
  • Epiphanytide Quarter:
    • Begins after Epiphany 2 and continues through Candlemas
  • Eastertide Quarter:
    • Begins after Easter 2 and continues through the Feast of the Ascension
  • Pentecost Quarter:
    • Begins after Pentecost and continues through June and July

This approach better allows the Center to accommodate the schedules of working clergy and working parents. By rearranging our academic calendar into quarters, the Center can offer shorter, more targeted courses that working adults will find easier to manage with regards to their professional schedules. By avoiding major days and weeks in the liturgical calendar (such as Advent 4, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Epiphany 1, Holy Week, and Easter 1), we hope that clergy and parish leaders in particular will find it easier to make time for continuing education courses.
