What We offer
Courses are offered through a combination of online learning opportunities, webinars, and in-person formation groups. Day-long retreats are offered periodically to give students a chance to worship and learn together, to ask deeper questions in small groups, and to reflect on their formation in the Episcopal tradition.
The Center for Christian Formation and Leadership offers the following academic concentrations in theological studies and pastoral formation:
Parish Administration and Leadership: 6 total credit units
This concentration emphasizes the practical skills a parish leader will need to maintain, support, and foster healthy systems processes in a local church community.
Requirements:
- 3 x core units in Congregational Life and Leadership, Episcopal Studies, and Anglican Studies
- 2 x electives in Liturgy and Music
- 1 x elective in Congregational Life and Leadership (or other area by permission)
Pastoral Formation and Leadership: 6 total credit units
This concentration emphasizes the psychosocial and pastoral care skills required for practical ministry in a variety of pastoral contexts.
Requirements:
- 4 x core units in Congregational Life and Leadership
- 1 x elective in Pastoral Ministry and Offices
- 1 x elective in Pastoral Liturgics
Preaching: 8 total credit units
This concentration emphasizes the necessary skills and areas of expertise required for preaching.
Requirements:
- 4 x core units in Homiletics
- 1 x elective Liturgy and Music
- 1 x elective in Pastoral Ministry and Offices
- 2 x electives in Scripture and Biblical Interpretation
Scripture and Biblical Interpretation: 6 total credit units
This concentration provides students with the necessary background in the Scriptures of the Christian tradition. This concentration includes units in both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament.
Requirements:
- 4 x core units in Bible (Hebrew Bible and New Testament)
- 2 x electives in Bible
Anglican Studies: 6 total credit units
This concentration introduces students to the history, spirituality, and legacy of the Anglican tradition, with a special concentration in Episcopal Church polity and structural organization.
Requirements:
- 2 x core units in Anglican Studies
- 1 x core unit in Episcopal Polity and Culture
- 1 x core unit in Episcopal Church History
- 1 x elective in either Spiritual Practices or Liturgy and Music
- 1 x elective by choice (may be cross-listed in other concentrations)
Church History: 6 total credit units
This concentration introduces students to the history, traditions, and people of the historical Christian church. A global perspective on church history is emphasized, with a special focus on the history of Anglicanism and the history of the Episcopal Church.
Requirements:
- 4 x core units in Church History
- 2 x electives in Church History (may be cross-listed in other concentrations)
Theology and Ethics: 6 total credit units
This concentration introduces students to systematic theology and the moral traditions of the Christian church.
Requirements:
- 3 x core units in Theology
- 3 x core units in Ethics
- 2 x electives (may be cross-listed in other concentrations)
Spirituality and Theological Formation: 6 total credit units
This concentration emphasizes spiritual formation according to different contemplative traditions in the Christian church over time.
Requirements:
- 4 x core units in Spirituality and Theological Formation
- 2 x electives (may be cross-listed in other concentrations)
In addition, students in each concentration will need to take one unit of Multi-Cultural Studies and one unit of Caribbean Studies.
